Wiki2008 Project

Mission: Create an interactive Wiki Review source

This is the beginning of my Wiki2008 project to learn about and use Wikis. It serves as the central repository for what I learn through the year as well as information added by guests. As the year progresses and different Wiki software is used, reviews will appear on these pages.

This Wiki is intended to be a collaborative effort digging into different Wiki structures and ease of use. Many websites contain huge lists of Wikis with spreadsheet matrixes spelling out hundreds of features for each product. That is not what this Wiki is all about. This is a learning resource that will include pages dedicated to Wiki reviews that are hands on. Long lists of features have their place when comparing different products, but at some point, a hands on summary is the best source for decision making.

Last year was my Year of the MindMap, learning about and incorporating their use into my daily life. The article, 2007---Year of the MindMap, briefly summarizes the year of learning about mind maps and using them. I plan to take a similar approach to this year's Wiki2008 project.

To begin the project, I set up custom searches in Google Reader of news and blog stories to scour the web for information on Wikis. That process is a month old and I have read many articles for inspiration and now is the time to start to actual process.

For more information on becoming a part of this project, visit Motivation on the Run for more details. I plan to build a page with all the pertinent information about this project as time permits, and it will be an ever-changing page as the project proceeds.

Wiki Resources

Organizational methods should be very simple. The Table_of_Contentswill contain a list of Wikis that are part of the ongoing process. Each Wiki will have its own page for detailed information, linked from the Table_of_Contents.

Wiki Organization

Each wiki will have its own dedicates page containing all the information gathered about it. If each page is consistant in layout, it will be easier for guests to view the data to choose their own wiki.

Each page should eventually contain:

  • Wiki Name
  • Wiki location
  • Overview
  • Ratings (using the 1-5 scale detailed below)
  • Detailed review (explaining the ratings for each criteria used)

This uniformity will make navigation of the pages easier.

As soon as time permits (unless some else beats me to it) I'll build a review template to add to the page template selection. Then when you add a page for a new wiki, selecting the review template will bring a page with all the setup done. You can then add the review to complete the page, making it much easier to add a new wiki to the list of reviewed products.

Judging Criteria

There are many different criterias that we can use for judging a wiki, but these are the ones that quickly come to mind. If you think others should be included, add them to the list for the benefit of everyone.

  • Ease of Navigation of Home webpage (can you find what you need)
  • Wiki documentation (how to get started?)
  • Wiki support site (is there a forum or support wiki?)
  • Ease of download (if applicable)
  • Ease of installation (if applicable)
  • Installation requirements (LAMP, Windows, Mac)
  • Ease of setup
  • Ease of configuration
  • Ease of customization
  • Ease of editing (basic, WYSIWYG)
  • Usage requirements (account, guest account, anonymous accounts)
  • Level of Expertise needed to use (same 1-5 scale)
  • Overall impression of the wiki

Here is the 1-5 scale summary. This will keep the reviews and ratings uniform for comparison purposes.

  1. Way too difficult
  2. Difficult
  3. Work involved
  4. Not bad at all
  5. Piece of cake
